From Awareness to Action: Cox Campus Offers Free Dyslexia Learning for Educators Nationwide
PR Newswire
ATLANTA, Oct. 15, 2026
During Dyslexia Awareness Month, educators can explore research on the reading brain, screening and assessment, and literacy development at no cost.
ATLANTA, Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Dyslexia Awareness Month offers educators an opportunity to deepen their understanding of dyslexia and how to support students who experience reading challenges. Cox Campus, the free online learning platform of the Rollins Center for Language & Literacy at the Atlanta Speech School, offers students who experience reading challenges, such as dyslexia, content on dyslexia that connects research to practice.
Cox Campus offers a growing collection of free learning opportunities to deepen educators’ understanding of dyslexia and related language and literacy needs. These include modules developed by the Literacy & Dyslexia Team within the University of California | California State University (UC|CSU) Collaborative for Neuroscience, Diversity, and Learning under the direction of Drs. Sue Sears and Maryanne Wolf. Bringing together expertise across general, special, and bilingual education, the team collaborated with the Rollins Center | Cox Campus to make these modules available free of charge, with continuing education units (CEUs) through Cox Campus’s IACET-accredited continuing education program.
“These modules represent years of collaborative work, bringing together reading researchers, neuroscientists, and teacher educators across general, special, and bilingual education. The goal was simple and rigorous: pull together past, present, and evolving research to answer the big questions about the reading brain and what that means for teaching reading,” said Dr. Maryanne Wolf, Director of the Center for Dyslexia, Diverse Learners, and Social Justice at UCLA.
Educators can also access the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) Dyslexia Series, developed by Dr. Kristin Sayeski, professor at the University of Georgia. A new course on Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), featuring Dr. Tiffany Hogan of Boston’s MGH Institute of Health Professions, expands this learning by exploring the strong connection between oral language and reading. Dr. Hogan highlights the frequent co-occurrence of DLD and dyslexia, with research indicating that approximately half of individuals with dyslexia also meet the criteria for DLD. Together, these offerings help educators better understand students’ overlapping language and literacy needs and provide more informed support.
Understanding dyslexia and supporting diverse learners
For educators, understanding dyslexia involves learning how reading develops, recognizing potential difficulties, and considering the needs of individual students. The modules offer opportunities to explore these topics and strengthen conversations with families and colleagues.
The series covers topics including:
- Introduction to dyslexia and literacy, including characteristics of dyslexia and strategies for working with families.
- The reading brain and dyslexia, including neurodiversity and the relationship between emotions and learning.
- Screening and assessment of literacy skills and dyslexia.
- Early childhood language and literacy development, including early markers of potential reading difficulties.
- Dyslexia and multilingual or English learners, with attention to language and literacy considerations.
Educators can explore individual topics or work through the series. Teacher preparation programs can also use the modules as a resource to support future educators’ understanding of literacy development and dyslexia, removing cost as a barrier to professional learning.
By making the modules available online at no cost, Cox Campus expands access to dyslexia learning beyond a single school, district, or university. Educators can build their knowledge without paying course fees, while education leaders can share the content with their teams.
The Literacy & Dyslexia modules complement Cox Campus’s broader language and literacy offerings, including its Structured Literacy Program, which is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). Structured Literacy emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in the skills students need to read and write. The program’s IDA accreditation is distinct from the continuing education credit available through the UC/CSU modules.
Learners seeking professional development credit should check their state or employer’s requirements to confirm whether the CEUs are accepted.
Turning awareness into learning
This October, Cox Campus invites educators and teacher preparation programs to use Dyslexia Awareness Month as a starting point for continued learning. Exploring the content on the Reading Disorders page can help educators examine their understanding of dyslexia and consider how that knowledge informs their work with students and families.
The Rollins Center’s commitment to literacy and justice for all guides this work: every child deserves access to literacy, and the adults supporting them deserve access to research-based learning.
